“Knowing how to properly care for your instrument is essential if you want it to last” says Simon Bennett, Managing Director of musicGuard.
Leading music insurer musicGuard shares musical instrument care and maintenance tips to ensure musicians can keep their beloved musical instruments in top condition.
Cleaning
A key aspect of caring for a musical instrument is cleaning it properly. Musicians should always wash their hands before playing, as sweat, oil, and other impurities on the hands can have a negative effect on instrument’s finish over time. When finished playing, it is recommended to gently wipe the instrument with a dry cloth. It is important to never use water directly on the instrument, a soft micro-fibre or lint-free cloth will work fine.
Storage
Some musicians choose a musical instrument stand, as it is easy to access, however this choice depends on the type of the instrument. While being able to reach the instrument easily is convenient, there is a risk of damage if the instrument is knocked over. In addition, temperature shifts or spikes in humidity can have a negative impact on the instrument.
It is advised to store the musical instrument in its original bag or case. However, as some musical instruments don’t provide a case, it is recommended to invest in one, as using a case helps to protect the instrument from temperature changes and provides additional padding to keep it safe.
Insurance
Many musicians who gig regularly or collect valuable guitars have some form of insurance on their instrument. Specialist musical instrument insurance can cover musicians for loss, damage, and theft.
“Insurance could be a worthwhile addition in order to cover your pride and joy” adds Bennett.
